About
Māmaki is a native tea plant, classified in the nettle family. Māmaki likes to have its feet wet, so it prefers to grow near running water and bright sun. This plant will grow into large abundant bush if it’s happy. Māmaki is also extremely important to the native Kamehameha butterfly, who uses the plant as a host for her eggs and larvae. The main threats facing māmaki in the wild are flooding, habitat degradation, and introduced ungulates.

Uses
A popular plant used by ancient Hawaiians, māmaki makes a vitality tea with a long list of health benefits. It is naturally caffeine-free and helps treat fatigue, high blood pressure, cholesterol, stress, and is generally associated with good health and longevity. To make the tea, the leaves are dried and boiling water is poured over top, then let it steep. This tea can be enjoyed warm or cold, and tastes good with honey, lime, mint, or lemon.

Growing tips
Māmaki wants ample drainage, she loves water but doesn’t want to sit in it. She also loves sun but can easily dry out if not observed. Watch for pests such as ants, melebugs, or aphids, as they will colonize a plant and impact it’s health. Recommended pest treatments are Saferbrand 3-in-1 spray from Ace, or homemade sulfur/dish soap concoction.
