  • About

Often confused with Hau, or Hibiscus tiliaceus, H. brackenridgei is the predominant native yellow hibisus. Ma’o hau hele is the official State Flower of Hawai’i. The maple-shaped leaves of the plant are distinctive and can become quite large, depending on the individual. This is an endangered species. The name Ma’o hau hele translates to “traveling green hau”, as the plant will often fall over and spread new roots, traveling from it’s original location.

  • Uses

Unknown. My research only turned up that Hawaiian’s planted this for ornamental uses. If you have additional information for this section, please contact me.

  • Growing tips

Ma’o hau hele prefers direct sun, but monitor the chosen location first to make sure the plant doesn’t get too hot. Leaves will wilt and start to brown. Make sure there is proper drainage. This plant can grow into a happy bush when outplanted, be mindful of wind because this plant can fall over.
