  • About

This is a popular fern that does well in shady to bright conditions. It is even sold all over the world in plant shops and commonly used in landscaping. However, individuals used are usually from India or Malaysia, where this plant is also native. The species name striga refers to the fuzziness of the fern, which can have varying levels of bristles similar to hair.

  • Uses

Palapalai is well known in Hawaiian culture as the representation of Laka, the goddess of hula. No surprise that this attractive fern is used commonly as adornment in hula, lei or pua (flower) arrangements. The fern was used by early Hawaiians as a treatment for insanity.

  • Growing tips

This fern is relatively easy. Keep in generally shady conditions. It will flourish the more it is watered. New shoots grow from below and this fern will fill an entire pot by expanding. Proper drainage is important in the soil, but this fern is undergrowth so it prefers moist conditions.
